A Design Fiction Film Exploring the Future of Funerals

Through the making of a fictional film, we set out to explore–what the future of funerals could be–that was the start of this project. Set in a near-future Japan, this film depictions forms of funerals and mourning. Centered around the death of a loved one and the subsequent funeral, it explores themes such as virtual (remote) attendance, the re-experience of funerals, and communication through virtual funeral venues. When mourning and technology come together, what do we feel and what do we think? The film presents one possible future. This film was produced as a “design fiction” film, with director Shun Arima–who became involved in film production as a researcher–accepting the offer from Daisuke Uriu, a design researcher specializing in funerals, mourning and memorialization in the digital age. The researchers aim to share it widely, fostering discussions on the future of funerals.
